Under this motto, today, 27 August, the United Nations marks World Lakes Day, reminding us of their crucial role in maintaining biodiversity, serving as a habitat for countless species of fish, plants, and wildlife. Additionally, lakes provide recreational and economic opportunities that support local communities.
However, lakes are affected by a combination of overuse of their waters, pollution, and climate change. Lake pollution is often caused by the influx of waste materials, fertilizers, pollutants, and solid waste that are either directly dumped or carried into lakes via rivers.
Water levels in lakes also change dramatically under the influence of climate change. High temperatures increase evaporation, while reduced rainfall disrupts natural replenishment. This threatens aquatic life and the ecosystems that depend on lake waters.
Therefore, it is time to reaffirm our commitment – to act in order to protect lakes and all life that depends on them!
