The Macedonian Ecological Society coordinated the mowing of the Prespa wet meadows for the sixth consecutive year – an activity carried out in cooperation with the Municipality of Resen, the Ezerani Nature Park, the Galicica National Park, and local farmers.
This year, around 18 hectares of meadows were mown, and approximately 70 tons of hay were collected. The hay was then distributed to a dozen local livestock breeders and to the Galicica National Park for use in their reproduction center for the European deer.
The protection and management of the Prespa wet meadows, based on scientific data, research, and successful practices from other regions in Europe and around the world, is vital for maintaining biodiversity and enhancing ecosystem services in the region. It also supports the promotion of sustainable livestock farming practices and contributes to wildfire prevention along the northern lakeshore.
The activity is part of the project “PrespaNET III – Conserving Biodiversity in Transboundary Prespa”, supported by the Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust (PONT), the Aage V. Jensen Foundation, and EuroNatur.
