The International Day for Biological Diversity, observed on May 22, aims to highlight the importance of preserving the planet’s biological diversity as a foundation for healthy ecosystems and sustainable living. This day reminds us that protecting biodiversity is essential for the well-being of both people and nature across the globe. Therefore, this year’s moto is: “Harmony with nature and sustainable development”.
With its exceptional natural heritage, the transboundary Prespa region stands as a living example of why it is so important to safeguard these values. On this day, we from the Macedonian Ecological Society and our partner organizations PPNEA from Albania and SPP from Greece, together reaffirm our shared commitment to the protection of our beloved Prespa – a place of outstanding natural beauty and biodiversity that deserves care, attention, and sustainable development for future generations.
“Prespa is one of the region’s most valuable natural and cultural treasures. With its ancient lakes, rare biodiversity, and rich tapestry of traditions, Prespa is a place where people strive to coexist in harmony with nature. This unique ecosystem connects three countries, but more importantly – it connects the people with their living heritage. That’s why caring for Prespa is not only an ecological necessity, but also a moral responsibility for all of us” – says Daniela Zaec, from the Prespa office of the Macedonian Ecological Society.
