Mowing of the Wet Meadows in Prespa 2025

For the sixth consecutive year, the Macedonian Ecological Society has been coordinating the mowing of the wet meadows in Prespa – an activity carried out in cooperation with the Municipality of Resen, the “Ezerani” Nature Park, the “Galichica” National Park, and local livestock farmers and agricultural producers.

The protection and management of the wet meadows in Prespa, based on concrete scientific data and research, is of great ecological and socio-economic importance. On one hand, the protection of these meadows is vital for maintaining biodiversity in the region; on the other hand, it promotes sustainable practices for the development of local livestock farming and wildfire prevention.

This year’s mowing activities are in their final phase, and the hay collected will be distributed to local livestock farmers and to the “Galichica” National Park for use in their European deer breeding center.

Each year, the Macedonian Ecological Society strives to expand this initiative by involving more stakeholders and beneficiaries. With a focus on local engagement and advocacy, we are organizing a presentation and open roundtable discussion titled “Wet Meadows in Prespa: Significance, Protection, and Management.” The event will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at the Small Hall of the Municipality of Resen, starting at 13:30.

These activities are part of the project “PrespaNET III – Conserving the Biodiversity of Transboundary Prespa”, supported by the Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust (PONT), the Aage V. Jensen Foundation, and EuroNatur.
