Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge – Celebrating Cultural Heritage

Building upon our long-term cooperation with the Municipal Primary School “Mite Bogoevski” in Resen, we held an interdisciplinary educational workshop on the occasion of World Wetlands Day, which this year is marked under the theme “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge – Celebrating Cultural Heritage.”

The workshop was conceived as an integration of the school subjects biology and history, through which students were introduced to the ways in which the natural environment and local biodiversity have influenced centuries-long cultural development and the shaping of cultural heritage in the Prespa Region.

In this context, the students became acquainted with the interconnection between natural and cultural heritage at seven significant sites in transboundary Prespa: the islands of Golem Grad (North Macedonia), Mal Grad (Albania), and Saint Achilleios (Greece); the former pile-dwelling settlements near Asamati and Nakolec (North Macedonia); the hilltop fortification Shurlensko Kale (North Macedonia); as well as the Tren Cave (Albania).

In addition, examples of archaeological finds were presented and analysed, whose symbolism and form clearly reflect the influence of the surrounding living world, emphasizing the profound interweaving of people and nature in the past.

This activity was carried out within the project “Prespa Green & Blue Initiative: Empowering Conservation through Research, Education and Communication” funded by the European Union under the programme “EU for Prespa” and co-funded by the Prespa-Ohrid Nature Trust (PONT). Project implementation partners are the Macedonian Ecological Society, the Municipality of Resen, Galichica National Park, the Society for the Protection of Prespa (SPP) from the Republic of Greece, and the Protection and Preservation of Natural Environment in Albania (PPNEA) from the Republic of Albania. The implementation of project activities is supported by the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning of the Republic of North Macedonia and Pelister National Park.
