Since 2010 MES has been implementing the Midwinter Waterfowl Census in Prespa as part of one of the largest and longest lasting monitoring programs in the world – the International Waterbird Census (IWC).

In 2019 we started testing and establishing regular monitoring protocols on target waterbird species (Great White, Little White and Purple Herons, Pygmy Cormorants, Dalmatian and Great White Pelicans, Common Pochard, Tufted and Ferruginous Duck, Great Crested Grebe and various reed warbler species). This activity will provide relevant breeding population size data and the species’ responses to their most immediate threats.
