Lake Prespa is one of the most important refuges for waterbirds in Europe. Its waters and shoreline habitats provide a home for pelicans, cormorants, grebes, herons, and many other species whose survival is closely linked to the health of this unique ecosystem. As Prespa is shared by three countries, its conservation is only possible through joint stewardship and transboundary cooperation among institutions, scientists, civil society organizations, and local communities.
Our friends from Europe House Bitola recently joined us during a waterbird monitoring survey on Lake Prespa, which we carry out in collaboration with Galicica National Park and Ezerani Nature Park (Municipality of Resen). The result is this wonderful video feature, which, alongside stunning footage of the lake and its birdlife, includes insights from our colleagues, Danka Uzunova and Metodija Velevski, who explain why Prespa is of invaluable importance for the conservation of biodiversity - not only in the region, but across Europe.

This activity was carried out within the project “Prespa Green & Blue Initiative: Empowering Conservation through Research, Education and Communication” funded by the European Union under the programme “EU for Prespa” and co-funded by the Prespa-Ohrid Nature Trust (PONT). Project implementation partners are the Macedonian Ecological Society, the Municipality of Resen, Galichica National Park, the Society for the Protection of Prespa (SPP) from the Republic of Greece, and the Protection and Preservation of Natural Environment in Albania (PPNEA) from the Republic of Albania. The implementation of project activities is supported by the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning of the Republic of North Macedonia and Pelister National Park.
